Mr. Mandalia obtained his orthopaedic training with the
Wessex Deanery, developing an interest in knee surgery early in his career,
derived from working with renowned knee surgeons. He obtained his Fellowship
training in knee surgery at leading centres in the UK and the USA (University
of Alabama, University of Pittsburgh).
Mr Mandalia is a consultant Orthopaedic surgeon at Royal Devon and Exeter
Hospital and Nuffield Exeter Hospital. Whilst he undertakes general trauma
on-call work, his prime interest continues to be knee surgery and his practice
encompasses all aspects of knee surgery.
Mr Mandalia offers both well established, proven, successful treatment and new
treatment developed as a result of a advanced research. He specialises in
arthroscopic (key hole surgery) surgery, advanced ligament reconstruction,
corrective osteotomy of the lower limb, partial knee replacement and total knee
replacement. He has developed and published advanced surgical techniques especially in fields of ligament reconstruction.
Mr. Mandalia is involved in education at various levels of the medical
profession. He is actively involved in training and teaching orthopaedic
trainees, Msc Sports medicine students, medical students, extended scope
practitioners and surgical care practitioners (SCP).
He also supervises physiotherapists for Msc thesis in sports injury. Many senior knee trainees as well as established surgeons from various parts of the world visit Mr. Mandalia to learn advanced knee surgery. Mr
Mandalia is the research lead for the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre at Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital. He has a strong research background and has authored a large
number of peer review publications, review articles and book chapter. His research area not only includes the clinical outcomes of various surgical treatments but also the cellular and molecular effect of various treatment modalities on the knee joint. He
has lectured and presented his research in national and international
orthopaedic meetings and has won awards and prizes.
Currently Mr. Mandalia is involved in many national and international
collaborative research projects including the outcome of patellofemoral joint
problem (anterior knee pain), advanced treatment of cartilage injury, return to
sports following ACL
reconstruction, outcome of partial knee replacement and computer navigated knee
replacement. Mr. Mandalia is fully registered with General Medical Council and
also a member of many distinguished organisations, including British
Orthopaedic Association, British Association of Surgery of the Knee, American Academy
of Orthopaedic Surgeon, International Cartilage Repair Society and, European
Society of sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy.
